DIY: Bik Bok

Earlier this summer, on my trip to Norway, I fell in love with a certain pair of shorts at the Bik Bok shop in Bergen. They caught my eye right away (as does mostly anything with studs...or plaid) but I couldn't justify paying the price for a pair of black shorts. My rational thinking was seriously tested upon seeing a Bik Bok employee rocking said shorts with sheer black tights but I managed to make an escape with the thought we all have but rarely ever follow through on: "I can make these myself!"

But this time I DID! Here's a ghetto, not-so-instructional photo guide. There's really not much to it: Find a pair of shorts you like, mine are Guess (purchased at Marshall's for around $20). Purchase some studs (I used these), lay out the studs in a pattern you like and then grab some pliers and start studding.

Heads up: My fingers were numb for 2 days after finishing this little project. A small price to pay for a cheap and successful DIY, I'd say.

The inspiration:

My finger-numbing DIY:

Once Miami decides to start participating in Fall like the rest of the country, I'll style up these shorts and wear them. I just don't think I can get away with black tights in ninety degree weather.

Future stud DIYs that I currently have planned. Note: I make no promises.

Flashback

The 9th grader in me (the one that covered every inch of everything she owned in safety pins) flipped out a little when I spotted this DIY Safety Pin T-shirt at DI$COUNT. Wow. If only my 9th grade mind was that creative.

Project: Tile Art!

You may recall that a while back I bought some awesome tiles to make some tile art with. Well, after some hard work (much more than I anticipated), I can finally say that it's finished!

Planning:

Some help cutting tiles (I'm too big of a wussy with table saws):

Priming (with a lazier project supervisor):

Frame assembly:

Setting the tiles (finally!):

The Skirt Project

Now that I'm on my little "extended vacation," I have plenty of time to work on all the little things that have been pushed aside in recent months. The first, this little skirt pattern I picked up recently. Skirt number one: complete!

Rackk and Ruin DIY

I was so impressed by this amazing DIY over at Rackk and Ruin that I just had to share it here. Get the full directions here.

The inspiration:

The before:

The after:

$10 thrifted boots, 2 zippers (ripped from used levi's nonetheless) and some black shoe polish = a new pair of boots!

As I commented on her blog, I once did a salvage project of my parents' AMAZING 1970s leather couches (shipped from Norway!) after they were destroyed in Hurricane Andrew. I had to tear out all the rusted zippers and sew in new ones, and let me tell you...sewing through leather is NOT an easy feat! My fingers were completely raw for weeks after. But it was worth it, I'm still displaying them proudly in my apartment!

Bush Fires

Hello friends,
I'm sure you have all seen this picture of "Sam," a furry victim of the bush fires in Victoria getting water from a firefighter. Well I knew I wanted to help out in some way but couldn't find a way to donate with American dollars. Well, I wanted to share this link with everyone and ask that if you can, PLEASE donate! To help, please visit RSPCA Victoria to donate money. Or if you are feeling especially crafty please visit Snowpea to learn how to make pouches for abandoned furry friends!

DIY: Lightbulb fixture

I'm loving this awesome lightbulb fixture and it appears to be pretty easy to make. You can find the directions here but they are a little ambiguous since they are translated from the Dutch magazine 101Woonideeen. I'll have to do a little bit of research on this one before I can actually make one, I guess!

DIY: Notebooks and Mobiles

Being from Miami where we have 2 seasons: summer and slightly hotter summer, I definitely get a kick out of enjoying all four seasons up here in Boston, especially Fall. I enjoy it so much that my first year up here I sent fall leaves to family and friends back home in Miami. Well here's a different idea via Design Sponge for what to do with those fall leaves that are covering the ground right now, a leaf mobile! Click HERE for directions on how to make your very own fall leaf mobile.

Here's another fun DIY idea that makes use of all that excess paper that is left taking up space around your home or office. Click HERE for all the information you need to make your own "eco-friendly notebook." Have fun!
